The University of Portsmouth is a very popular university, ranked among the leading modern universities. The University’s history dates back to 1908 when it was first established as Portsmouth Municipal College. Location

Just 90 minutes by direct train from the centre of London, Portsmouth is also within easy reach of Heathrow, Gatwick and Southampton airports. As a busy ferry port, it is a gateway to the continent with regular sailings to France and Spain.

Accommodation

The University offers a wide range of purpose-built, modern and well-equipped halls of residence. Both catered and self-catered options are available. The halls are available across three locations, with 3000 rooms in total:

  • Guildhall Halls – self-catered halls located in the city centre and comprising Bateson Hall, Harry Law Hall, Margaret Rule Hall, Trafalgar Hall and James Watson Hall.
  • Langstone Student Village – situated on Langstone Harbour and comprising Langstone Flats, Trust Hall and QEQM Hall offering self-catering and flexible catering options.
  • Rees and Burrell – catered halls situated close to Southsea seafront.

In the self-catered halls, students cook for themselves in shared kitchens, or in their own kitchenettes. The catered halls provide up to 14 meals per week.

Facilities at the halls include:

  • Utility services – gas, electricity, water
  • Free Broadband connection available 24 hours per day (PCs are not supplied)
  • Digital Television – access to 25 freewire channels through PC or laptop.
  • Internet telephone – every room has an internet telephone handset installed as standard, allowing free or very low cost calls worldwide.
  • A dedicated halls community support team
  • Access to launderette facilities
  • Basic insurance cover

All new international (non-EU and non-exchange) students starting a full-time course in September 2014 are guaranteed an offer of a place in University halls for the first year of study.

English language requirement

If your first language is not English, the University’s minimum English language proficiency levels are:

  • Undergraduate study, 6.0 in the IELTS test or equivalent, or GCSE/IGCSE English Language C. Individual courses may have a higher level of English language requirement.
  • Postgraduate and research degrees applicants must have an IELTS score of 6.0 to 7.0 or equivalent.

We offer undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees across a wide range of disciplines. The courses are structured to extend knowledge and broaden the skills of the students. Members of the academic staff are international experts in their fields.
