English language requirements

The minimum English language levels for courses at the University of Reading are IELTS 6.5, TOEFL (paper) 570, TOEFL (internet) 88. Some courses require higher levels – you should always check with the department or faculty you are applying to.

You can access full module descriptions for each module, including teaching and learning methods, learning outcomes and contact hours. All modules show the credit values in UK credits and ECTS.

We also have the following Language based module available for non-native English speaking Study Abroad Programme students –  LA1PE8 – English for Erasmus students (Full year; 10 ECTS)

Guide to selecting modules

To identify easily the precise level of difficulty and relevance of each module you can use:

  • Module code
  • Module descriptions

Each module taught at Reading has a unique 6 or 7 digit code e.g. HS3STA. The first two letters of the module code identify the subject e.g. HS = History.

The first numeral indicates the level of the module, corresponding to the year of the degree programme in which it is taught:

  • 1= First year
  • 2 = Second year
  • 3 = Third year
  • M = Master (postgraduate level – only available for students on postgraduate exchanges)

Modules noted as being taught for Autumn & Spring are taught once over the two terms, not once in Autumn and once in Spring. It is possible to select modules that are taught over two terms if you are here for only one term – you will receive a reduced amount of credit.

Restrictions

Students coming to Reading through department owned exchanges generally can only select modules from the subject area noted in the agreement between our institutions.

Students coming to Reading via university-wide partnerships can select modules in any subject area, providing that you have the necessary background knowledge in order to successfully complete the module.
